Engine work is where an honest opinion matters most, because the numbers get large enough that repairing the car is not always the right answer. We will tell you plainly when a repair is not worth what the vehicle is worth.
Most of what we see is preventable: overheating that cooked a head gasket, a timing belt left past its interval, an oil leak ignored until the level dropped far enough to do damage. Caught early, these are ordinary jobs.
We diagnose before we quote. Compression and leak-down testing, cooling system pressure testing, and a proper look at where oil is actually coming from tell us whether the problem is a two-hour job or a two-day one.
Signs to watch for
- Temperature gauge climbing, or steam from under the hood — pull over
- Knocking, ticking or rattling that changes with engine speed
- White smoke from the exhaust, or coolant disappearing with no visible leak
- Oil spots under the car or a burning smell after driving
- A significant loss of power, or the engine running on fewer cylinders
When to have it done
- Timing belts at the manufacturer interval — usually 60,000 to 105,000 miles
- Immediately if the temperature gauge rises above normal
- As soon as an oil or coolant leak appears, while it is still small
- Any knocking noise, without delay
