Starters & Alternators
Starting and charging system testing and replacement.
A car that will not start has three usual suspects: the battery, the starter, or the alternator that was supposed to be keeping the battery charged. They produce similar symptoms and get confused constantly, which is why people replace batteries that were never the problem.
The difference is diagnosable in minutes with the right equipment. A starter that clicks but does not turn is telling you something different from one that spins without engaging, and an alternator putting out 13.9 volts under load is behaving differently from one putting out 12.1.
We test the whole starting and charging system as one circuit, including the cables and grounds, because a corroded ground strap will mimic a failed alternator perfectly.
Signs to watch for
- A single loud click when you turn the key, and nothing else
- Grinding or whirring during cranking
- Battery light on while driving
- Lights and dash dimming or flickering as engine speed changes
- A new battery that went flat within weeks
When to have it done
- As soon as cranking sounds different from normal
- Any time the battery warning light comes on while driving
- When a battery fails early — the charging system is often why
What K&K does
- Test the starting and charging circuits under load, including cables and grounds
- Voltage drop testing to find corroded connections rather than replacing good parts
- Starter and alternator replacement with quality units
- Re-test after the repair to confirm output is within specification
